ITC Mismatch Reconciliation

Input tax credit is real money. If the credit you claim in GSTR-3B does not match with what your suppliers have reported then the department notices and you may be asked to reverse it with interest occurred. Sometimes the fault is yours. Often it is a supplier who filed late, or not at all. At BK TAXLAWFIN LLP, we compare your books with the GST portal data, find where the gap is and help you fix it before it turns into a notice.

What is ITC Mismatch Reconciliation?

It means mismatching the credit in your purchase records and GSTR-3B with the invoices that appear in your GSTR-2B. Every differences has a reason, and the reason decides what you do next. A missing invoice needs a follow-up with the supplier. A wrong GSTIN needs a correction. Credit that was never allowed has to be reversed.

GSTR-2B is built from the returns your suppliers file, so it does not change when you update your own books. The two can drift apart without anyone noticing. The officer compares the credit you claimed in GSTR-3B with this statement during scrutiny and if you claimed more credit you will be asked to explain the difference. Reconciling between the 14th and 20th of every month lets you find that gap first.

Common Reason for ITC Mismatch

  • The supplier has not filed GSTR-1, or filed it late after the monthly cutoff date

  • Invoice details such as GSTIN, date or amount were accidentally typed a digit wrong

  • Credit was taken where the law does not allow it
